Crestview Thunderbirds traveled to the Riggs Stadium in Fort
Walton Beach for a rematch against the Falcons. First time we played on
artificial turf. 5PM kickoff so it was very hot and artificial turf holds
the heat!
Falcons won the coin toss and received the
ball. By the first quarter, we were down 28-0. It was quiet bad
since our goal was three fold. First and foremost, after the Buffalo game,
we needed to play as a team. Secondly, score a touchdown. And
thirdly, close the 21 point spread they beat us with last time. The way
things were looking, it was going to be ugly, ugly for us. The Falcons
announcer was already announcing the "Victory Party at XYZ after the game."
Ouch. Coaches calmed everyone down as we prepared for second quarter.
Second quarter and we get our team to start
working as a unit. We managed to make our first touchdown and that was a
great feeling.
Players and fans went crazy.
I'm not sure which was better. The three point field
goal against Wolfpac because that was the very first time we ever scored OR this
first touchdown. Either way, it was a great feeling.
Come half time and everyone is pumped up
and I'm hoping we can ride on that excitement for the rest of the game.
Even though we're down by three touchdowns, everyone is smiling ear to ear and
even the coaches are obviously pleased.
After the Falcons totally rolled over us
first quarter, it appeared to be our turn to do a little rolling of our own as we put
two more
unanswered touch downs on the board. When it was 20-28, I heard the
announcer stop saying "Victory Party" and started saying "After Party."
Yes, everyone knew that at this point in the game, we had a chance for a major
upset. Our fans were so loud we couldn't hear anything on the sidelines.
Let me tell you, if you've never experienced it, you'll never understand.
What a feeling.
End of third quarter and Falcons score
again and then two more times in fourth quarter for a decisive victory. Truthfully, while a win would
have been phenomenal, we managed to score more touchdowns on the Falcons that
they had scored on them in the last three games combined. At a 22 point
spread, we didn't manage to close the gap as we wanted to but we did great.
Everyone left there with their heads high and proud of what we had done.
Falcons were again most gracious at the end of the game with several of their
players telling us we had made a lot of improvements.
As I wrote about the June 6th game, it'll
take 3-4 games for us to play as a team. Well, this is our fourth game and
as I predicted, we've come together as a team. Looking forward to the rest
of the season!
